“Doing Your Own Research”
Most people think "doing your own research" means Googling until something sounds right. But that's not quite it. Here's what it actually means.
Real research isn't about scrolling more. It's about asking better questions. In this video, we break down 5 questions you should ask yourself before trusting any health information online:
Is this a credible source? Who funded the research? How strong is the study? Is someone trying to sell me something? And most importantly, do you believe it because it's true, or because it confirms what you already think?
Save this for the next time something feels confusing, urgent, or too good to be true.
MedShadow is an independent nonprofit. No pharma funding, ever. For the full story and our sources, visit medshadow.org.

Do Antibiotics Cancel Out Birth Control? What the Evidence Actually Says
Many people are told to use backup birth control when taking antibiotics. But current evidence shows most commonly prescribed antibiotics are unlikely to reduce effectiveness. There are a few important exceptions, so understanding which ones matter can help you make informed decisions.

Your online prescriber might not know your full health history. Here's why that matters.
Side effects aren't one-size-fits-all. They depend on your history, your other meds, and your body.
When meds are prescribed through a screen, the conversation around possible side effects based on your personal details often gets skipped. Convenient? Yes. Risk-free? Not always.

Medication Made Simple π
Most prescriptions in the U.S. are generic — but “generic” doesn’t mean identical.
While generics are required to have the same active ingredient, dose, and relative absorption rates, differences in inactive ingredients and manufacturing can matter more than people think.
With growing attention from lawmakers on drug safety and transparency, it’s worth understanding what you’re actually taking.
Follow along as we break it all down.

What to Know About SSRIs in Adolescents
SSRIs are commonly prescribed to adolescents as a first-line treatment for anxiety and depression. But there’s more to the story.
Research suggests that more than half of people taking SSRIs may experience sexual side effects, including reduced libido, decreased sensation, and difficulty reaching orgasm.
At the same time, antidepressant prescriptions among people ages 12–25 have risen sharply—climbing by two-thirds between 2016 and 2022, with an additional surge after COVID.
While some SSRIs are FDA-approved for pediatric use, others are prescribed off-label. And all carry a black box warning due to an increased risk of suicidal thoughts and behaviors in people under 25.
These medications can be essential—but they also require informed, thoughtful use, especially during adolescence.

What is forest bathing? πΏ
It’s not what it sounds like. Also called shinrin-yoku, this Japanese practice is all about slowing down and immersing yourself in nature using your senses.
Studies suggest it may help lower stress, support mood, and decrease blood pressure in the short term — though research is still evolving.
In a world where Americans spend about 90% of our time indoors… this might matter more than we think.
