Medication Made Simple πŸ’Š

Most prescriptions in the U.S. are generic — but “generic” doesn’t mean identical.

While generics are required to have the same active ingredient, dose, and relative absorption rates, differences in inactive ingredients and manufacturing can matter more than people think.

With growing attention from lawmakers on drug safety and transparency, it’s worth understanding what you’re actually taking.

Follow along as we break it all down.

What to Know About SSRIs in Adolescents

SSRIs are commonly prescribed to adolescents as a first-line treatment for anxiety and depression. But there’s more to the story.

Research suggests that more than half of people taking SSRIs may experience sexual side effects, including reduced libido, decreased sensation, and difficulty reaching orgasm.

At the same time, antidepressant prescriptions among people ages 12–25 have risen sharply—climbing by two-thirds between 2016 and 2022, with an additional surge after COVID.

While some SSRIs are FDA-approved for pediatric use, others are prescribed off-label. And all carry a black box warning due to an increased risk of suicidal thoughts and behaviors in people under 25.

These medications can be essential—but they also require informed, thoughtful use, especially during adolescence.

What is forest bathing? 🌿

It’s not what it sounds like. Also called shinrin-yoku, this Japanese practice is all about slowing down and immersing yourself in nature using your senses.

Studies suggest it may help lower stress, support mood, and decrease blood pressure in the short term — though research is still evolving.

In a world where Americans spend about 90% of our time indoors… this might matter more than we think.

Osteoporosis drugs & new FDA fracture warnings 🚨

The FDA has updated safety labels for several bisphosphonate medications including Fosamax, Reclast, Actonel, Atelvia, Binosto, Fosamax Plus D, and ibandronate sodium (Boniva generic). These drugs are commonly used to treat or prevent osteoporosis by slowing bone loss.

The update expands warnings about “atypical” fractures — previously focused on the thigh bone — to include other bones. In some cases, fractures may happen with little or no trauma.

Watch for warning signs like new, dull pain in the thigh, hip, groin, or other areas in the days or weeks before a fracture. Risk may be higher if you’re taking glucocorticoids like prednisone.

Are you a fan of cannabis?

Cannabis products are not regulated at the federal level, and state standards vary. Investigative testing has found toxins, pesticides, and heavy metals in products purchased off the shelf.

Some studies have even found higher levels of cadmium and lead in people who consume cannabis, and certain vape devices may add metals of their own.

Before you partake, get the full story.
